9×9 Asbestos Tiles

Vinyl Asbestos Tile (VAT) Remedies?
My house was built in the mid-1950’s and has original 9×9 floor tiles in the basement (based on age I’m guessing they’re VAT). They’re mostly all in good shape with little cracking or chipping. I’m considering options for refinishing the room and have been thinking about Nature Stone or a similar poor-in type flooring as an option to paying disposal charges to have the tiles removed and disposed of. The basement isn’t terribly dry so I’d like to stay away from carpet and the ceiling is rather low so I’d rather not subfloor. Would this work? Are there other options I should consider? Thanks!
The presence of asbestos might not be the problem.
A coating will only be as good as the bond holding the tiles down.
If additional thickness is a problem , might consider solid sheet vinyl.
It may qualify in your area as an encapsulation material &.is
only about 1/8″ thick.
A flooring contractor will be able to tell if what you have is actually VAT, ( chips & cracks…probably is) & whether it is good enough as a base material or if it needs to be removed.
Removal is expensive as mentioned & will most likely have to include removal of the original adhesive which can also contain asbestos ( usually black).
On former job , contractors were permitted to overrun VAT w/ sheet vinyl( w/ welded seams ) even in healthcare facilities.
If local regs permit, let sleeping dogs lie & consider sheet vinyl
More expensive than regular roll vinyl ( even that might qualify) but way cheaper than an abatement.
Best regards
