What happens when you don’t check for ‘Asbestos’ on a ‘popcorn’ ceiling before removing it?

I want to take off the popcorn/cottage cheese ceiling. But, what happens if I don’t check for ‘asbestos’ before I do so?

Once airborne, asbestos can be breathed in. Asbestos Causes Cancer and you definitely don’t want to be breathing it. If you remove the ceiling you will release The Asbestos fibers into the air. Asbestos really needs to be removed by a remediation company — it’s not for amateurs.
