Roofing Asbestos

Can anyone tell me something about Lamarite roofing and titanium underlayment?

My roofing contractor wants to use these materials to replace my asbestos shingle roof. Does anyone have any experience with these that they can share?

Lamarite is made by Tamko roofing. It is an imitation slate product made of recycled rubber, binder and pigment. It is “new” to the market in roofing terms. It has a long guarantee I think 50 years. check into the availability of a “system” warranty which can only be offered by a trained and approved tamko contractor. It gives you much better protection in case of a product or workmanship problem. The product looks nice but the possible down side is potential fading, or curling. Many products have been introduced to the market as slate substitutes but many have failed. Lamarite is a fairly expensive product which is a bit risky for something that does not have a 20 year track record. It weighs only a fraction of what slate weighs 1/4 – 1/6 but it costs just as much as a material. Labor is much less expensive. Make sure the product color lots (they vary due to the recycled raw material) are mixed correctly and that the spacing between tiles is as per Tamko’s instructions. Get references from your contractor especially on other local Lamarit jobs. Call the other customers and ask a lot of questions.
