Yes, the jet fuel by itself would not be enough to weaken the steel. However the burning jet fuel ingnited all of the combustible material inside of the tower, notably all of the paper.

As an iron worker, you know that the strength of steel comes primarily from the carbon inclusions within the iron. When there is enough heat to dissolve these inclusions, the steel becomes only as strong as iron. When that happens, the steel/iron doesn’t melt–it bends under whatever load it is carrying. This puts added stress on the surrounding structural members, eventually leading to collapse.

Also, as an iron worker, you know that in many modern buildings the steel is covered with some type of thermal blanketing material, to keep the heat from a fire away from the steel. Why go to so much trouble if, as you claim, a fire cannot bring down a steel building?

As to the black smoke: This signifies that all of the oxygen inside the WTC was being consumed in the usual burning process, and that other combustible materials were also being consumed without oxygen. This points to a very large fire indeed.

As to the firefighter on the 78th floor. The South Tower was struck askew, and there was one corner that was not on fire. I believe that one of the stairwells was still accessible, and that people above the impact level were able to escape thru this stairwell. So this “evidence” has no merit.

I have a graduate degree in civil engineering, and have studied the failure of many buidlings, including the failure of steel buildings during fires. Anyone who doubts that the WTC failed due to the aircraft impacts and resulting fire should:
1) Read up on the collapse of buildings
2) Provide an alternate explanation how those other buildings fell
3) Face up to whatever emotional need they have to see a conspiracy. I say this because I have relations who “go to conspiracy” on everything.

(And you can see in the questioner’s subsequent remarks that he falls into the same category as my relations. They bring up some conspiracy theory, and then berate those who don’t believe it. It really is a strange psychopathology. Writing this post is good exercise for me to get ready to listen to and counter the rantings of their shriveled minds.)

Again, for those of you quoting resource sites, remember that they all contain a central erroneous argument–that steel has to melt before buildings fail.

Are modern electricians still regularly exposed to asbestos?

Considering that they have to get into crawlspaces with asbestos filled insulation, drill holes in asbestos filled drywall, flooring and ceiling tiles, and handle asbestos coated wiring/boxes. Are electricians still at a high risk of developing mesothelioma? And what of their family members, and anyone else who occupies the same residence with them?

Should I be worried about the ceiling in my house containing asbestos?

What filters would I need for protection from asbestos?

I need to know what kind of filters are raited for Asbestos Protection I thought any P100 would work but I am not sure and do not want to risk it. Exposure is going to be no longer than a few hours at a time and I am not doing any cleanup so I won’t be stirring the area too much there are pipes with broken insulation in some areas that I will be walking past. OSHA does not specify catridges. They just say that up to 1.0 f/cc you need a HEPA, which P100s fit the bill. They are still the standard.

There have been changes in the respiratory standard including change out scheduling. you may want to review that.

No Lease Was Sighned When I Rented Now I am being evicted!?

I live in a rent house in Virginia. There was no lease to sign at the time we moved in. We got behind on our rent 2 months because my husband took a pay cut. We did not get a 30 day written notice to leave. The landlord took out a unlawful detainer anyway and lied on the court paper that she had given written 30 day notice. The house when we moved in was suppose to get new sideing that has been 3 years ago the sideing is asbestos shingle sideing and the wireing is not up to code either. I had to call the Building Code Inspector out to the house he told me we had to move out right now the house was unfit to live in my kitchen floor is about to fall in we have told them of the problem they will not fix it. We have tried to give the back rent payed up and she refused to take the money what to do?

Asbestos is inhaled through dust. If it becomes or is lose or “friable” then you may inhale particles of dust that contain asbestos. Long term exposure to the particles is what causes the cancer called mesotheloma. If a piece does come lose put on a dust mask & simply put some duct tape over the small area untill you can have it fixed.

- asbestos was once widely use because it was a great insulator. It held heat in pipes, houses. & also because it bonded so well with other materials glues, tiles.

Cost to have professionals come remove residential Asbestos Popcorn ceilings?

I’ve searched and can’t find a suitable answer to this question, so I thought perhaps someone here worked in this field or has had this done in the recent past , so you could give me an idea.

I just bought a late 70’s home with the popcorn styled glittery ceilings. Now they collect dirt, are out of style and from what I understand likely contain asbestos. My research tells me that to properly dispose of it, well it’s risky and a pain in the butt and requires several purchases. Although it seems most people just do it cluelessly without knowing the risk. Soooo, I’d rather hire someone to do it. I know it would vary by how much you have, but I’m not positive yet. I thought perhaps they charged by the foot or something? and yes I am trying to call around but haven’t found any answers yet! Thanks.

rookie writer also sounds like a rookie craftsmen.although asbestos was banned in the late 70’s,it is possible there was still some in circulation.If you do decide to remove it yourself,get a sprayer,like you would use for weed killer,fill it with water and spray your ceiling first,let it set for a few minutes,then scrape.it should come off real nice.re-wet as needed.if its been painted with a semi-gloss paint it may be a little tougher to scrape.wear a dust mask.

Are the Lungs the most imperfect part of the human body?

I can’t think of another organ that is as vulnerable. We need them to live and they have to constantly be working like the heart, but things like fiberglass and asbestos can get stuck in there and our only defense is to cough until we die. Shouldn’t there be a better method of purging dangerous materials from the lungs considering it’s very easy for particles to get stuck in there? Shouldn’t humans develop a filter in the trachea? Why not?

the rrt-nps has an good response but doesnt quite get to the root of your question. let me explain. the pleura is a thin membrane which lines the outer wall of the lung (organ) and the interior wall of the chest cavity. in between those two membranes is a thin veil of fluid which keep the two tissues linings slippery. that just describes the pleura membranes. now oddly enough the pleura is also a term applied to mean the active tissue which makes up the lung as an organ. so what is thickening? if we’re relating to the pleural membranes then those fine tissues begin to loose their elastic properties and prevent the lung from expanding as well as it could on inhalation (mind you this is a very simplistic explanation), and can cause pleural effusions and infections of the lining/s. if were talking about thickening of the pleura, as the tissue of the lung, then it means the tissue is loosing its elastic properties, the air passages begin to harden (not like cement but sort of), airflow is impaired, and in general the lung cannot expand as well as it should. xrays show whitishness in areas where there shouldnt be much whiteishness. im not going to explain that except to say lung tissue normally is black, as tissue stiffens it can demonstrate white (which means more density or scarring.) asbestosis does have an affect on both the pleural linings and the pleural tissue, but one has to have been exposed to asbestose for at least 15 years even more for a doctor to definitively state that pathologic asbestosis is present . then it must be confirmed by xray/ct scan, and pulmonary function testing that demonstrates a restrictive process, a decreased DLCO (diffusion study), with an increase in the time for nitrogen wash out to occur. i have probably over answered your question but when you bring asbestosis into the discussion then you need to more fully understand what pleural thickening means. asbestosis is also irreversible and may qualify on for disability because it can be debilitating.

What does it look like? Just about anything. Asbestos is a powder that was added to many products. It has a high heat resistance, so it was used to insulate exhaust pipes. It was used in “popcorn” ceilings, floor tiles, insulation, home siding, etc.

About the only way you can tell if you have asbetos is to have the product in question tested. It is safe as long as it doesn’t become airborne as a dust.

The 1980’s was a decade in which Asbestos Abatement was at it’s peak.

Is asbestos in floor glue dangerous?

Our church was looking at putting in a new floor and when we brought contractors in to give estimates they told us that the old floor was put down using asbestos floor glue. Now we have heard two different stories from two different contractors. One says we should remove it the other says we don’t have to.

What is your opinion of the use of Asbestos Water troughs or feed bowls?

I have been riding horses 28 years and have never used an asbestos feed bowl or watertrough. I recently immigrated to a new country (took my horse with) and the horsey community here mainly use asbestos feed and water containers of some form. I have only ever used concrete or hard plastic containers.
I am a bit concerned about changing what I’m used to and can find no-one where I come from that approves of asbestos containers. However, here I can find no-one that disapproves.
There are a lot of suspicious colics here and I’m wondering if it might be linked…..
So what is your opinion? And why?

Is it coated at all? Asbestos is a natural occurring mineral, called a silicate. Silicates are harmful when they are released into the air (like, for instance, when you insulate a house, remove tiles or break up pipes or shingles coated in it) because the tiny particles are irritating to your lungs, and as someone else mentioned, it can pierce the lung tissues leading to chronic illness, cancer and other nasties.

It isn’t harmful when it’s solid, though, only when particles are released and you can breathe them in.

If it’s well coated, it’s probably ok. I’d ask a vet I trust about it if you’re still concerned and I would make sure I replaced it when it starts getting worn.

ADD 2- As it mentions here in the article, there is a case of children eating crayons containing small amounts of a certain type of asbestos and not getting ill. That being said, I doubt that even eating a little would, in its self cause a colic by virtue of The Asbestos in whatever was eaten, but perhaps having any foreign material in the gut and intestine could cause some irritation and maybe an impaction which could lead to colic.

I was diagnosed with pleural disease and mild asbestosis by a respirologist. Have I any rights to entitlement?

I live in British Columbia but was exposed to asbestos in Ontario during the late 60s and early 70s. The Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WS&IB) is saying that I have no entitlement. The WS&IB has accepted asbestos related pleural disease but will not accept the diagoses of asbestosis. Do I have any options?

You need to find a respiratory specialist who can pinpoint where and when you were exposed. To make it easier, try and find support groups for this, you may have them in Ontario…especially if you were exposed in a certain workplace or school. If you can track down others you worked with or went to school with who suffered the same fate. Power is in the numbers. You may even have a class action law suit against a former employer/school board. Good luck.

But if you really want the job that’s being offered, then by all means, take it. I would advise you not to, as it puts your health at risk. If you’re fairly happy with your job right now, I’d say stay with it.

How do I check for asbestos in floor tiles?

I have 12 by 12 vinyl floor tiles I am removing. They are 20 years old, or so.. How do I know if there is an asbestos risk?

The 12 x 12 tiles do not contain asbestos. The 9×9 ones do if they are are about 40 years of age. If you are concerned it wouldn’t hurt to wear a respirator in case it gets dusty.

Home inspection found asbestos and bulging basement walls?

I am a single mother and first time home buyer. I am currently under contract on a house I just had inspected. The inspector found the attic was full of Asbestos Containing insulation. Also, the basement walls have some bulging and cracks and virtually none of the electrical outlets are grounded. There are also huge tree limbs that are hanging over wires and the roof some plumbing leaks/corrosion as well as evidence of improper wiring in the basement as well as some cracks in the chimney. What i want to know is how much is acceptable and when you should walk away. I am not going to have a ton of money for major repairs right away. The house was built in 1953. any advice is appreciated!

since the home inspection failed you should get out of the contract quick. due to everything that is wrong . also since there is asbestos and the wiring is old which i bet it is the old knob and tube.
also i would bet there is lead base paint. and also since there is a crack chimney that would have to be replaced not repaired and also the roof repair is not going to be cheap either and if the plumbing has clay pipes that also will have to change out. and i would say the seller will not pay for all the repairs . so please walk away bigtime it is not worth it
