What are the stages of mesothelioma?

Hi. I was exposed to asbestos, silica and hydrofluoric acid fumes on the job for 10 years (20 yrs ago). In 05 I went into respiratory failure. An open lung biopsy turned up pleural Atypical Mesothelial Hyperplasia. The pulmonologists say it is asbestos related but it won’t go any further. The brave people I’ve talked to who are dealing with mesothelioma say they had Atypical Mesothelial Hyperplasia at one time.

* Stage 1a mesothelioma affects the outer layer of the pleura around the chest wall, on one side of the chest only. It may have grown in the pleural tissue covering the diaphragm
* Stage 1b mesothelioma has started to spread to the inner pleural layer (closest to the lungs), but remains on one side of the chest.
* Stage 2 mesothelioma has spread to both layers of the pleura on one side of the body, and has enlarged to form a tumour mass on the pleural tissue around the lungs, or has started to spread into the diaphragm muscle or the lung tissue
* Stage 3 mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall or the covering of the heart (pericardium), but is still potentially removable by surgery. Or it has spread to the lymph nodes on the same side of the chest

Information on obtaining Breast Milk for sick relative?

Hi –
My father hasn’t been given long to live due to asbestos induced cancer. I have researched (and he has already started) alternative medicine treatments in addition to his chemotherapy. I read several resources that mention some of the essential nutrients a body becomes deficient in overtime are found naturally in breastmilk. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is milk banks that support illnesses (rather than just premature babies) or how one can go about obtaining bmilk from a private source.

There isn’t a lot of research yet with breast milk & cancer but I did read some Swedish research where breast milk killed cancer cells. It is easily digested, I can see why it would help during chemo. If you go to breastfeed.com and resources it lists some milk banks. You may need a prescription from a doc for it though, which might be tough with the skeptical docs, but check it out. You might want to check out Essiac tea, you can research it online, I have heard of awesome results with it!

How Far Has Your Mesothelioma Cancer Spread?

Doctors often rely on knowing the different stages of mesothelioma to be able to effectively treat this type of cancer. Like most other cancers, this type of cancer passes through different stages as the disease advances, these different stages have significant bearing on the type of treatment that will be prescribed and on the most likely outcome of the disease.

The various mesothelioma stages generally indicate how far the disease has progressed beyond its original point of origin. Localized mesothelioma is diagnosed when the cancer has not spread beyond the membrane (most often the lining of the lungs) in which it originated. If the cancer cells have spread beyond this lining to invade the lungs, chest wall cavity or other body organs it is considered an advanced mesothelioma stage, which is much more difficult to treat.

Beyond this informal localized vs. advanced classification, four distinct stages are recognized by each of the two most widely used mesothelioma staging systems. One system, the TNM staging system, is used most often in progressive cancer treatment centers and is recognized by the American Cancer Society as the most accurate mesothelioma staging system.
The other, the Butchart Staging System, is the most common system for staging cancer in general.

Butchart Mesothelioma Stages

The Butchart system classifies mesothelioma cancer into four different stages depending on the stage of the main tumor mass.

• Stage I – Cancer is only seen in one side of the chest lining, or pleura

• Stage II – The mesothelioma has spread to any one of the chest wall, esophagus or heart or the lymph nodes of the chest

• Stage III – The cancer has invaded the diaphragm and the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneal cancer) or has spread to additional lymph nodes in the body

• Stage IV – Mesothelioma has spread to several major organs The Butchart staging system has been replaced largely by the TNM system for classifying mesothelioma cancer stages.

TNM Staging System

TNM stands for Tumor, Nodes and Metastasis; three keys to determining how advanced mesothelioma cancer is using this system. T stands for the extent of the tumor, N for how advanced the disease is in the lymph nodes and M for the extent of spread of the cancer into other organs.

• Stage I – Mesothelioma is restricted to the pleura of the chest and has not spread to other areas.

• Stage II – The cancer has spread to the pleural lining and to the outer lining of the lung or into the lung itself.

• Stage III – In addition to the pleura, mesothelioma spreads to part of the chest cavity behind the breast bone or within the chest wall. This stage also usually includes cancer of the lymph nodes.

• Stage IV – The most advanced of the mesothelioma stages, when cancer has spread to major organs or the bones or brain. Metastasis refers to the generalized spreading of the cancer.

Each individual case of mesothelioma is different and these stages are not the only factors that determine the type of treatment and the prognosis of the disease. Other factors come into consideration.

Pleural mesothelioma starts in the lungs. The pleura is a membrane around the lungs and is inside the chest. Whenever doctors refer to “pleural” or “pleura” this is the area they are talking about. Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms are similar to many other pleural diseases and cancers. Pleural disease is often one of the early mesothelioma stages of pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma and pleural diseases begin by attacking this membrane, which makes it more difficult to breathe. Chest pain is a very common mesothelioma symptom; however it is also a symptom of many pleural diseases, including pleural mesothelioma. The fluid in this “pleura space” keeps your lungs breathing smooth and rhythmically when it’s flowing peacefully. It revolves in a continuous state of production and removal. When asbestos enters the lungs and chest and mesothelioma symptoms begin, the balance disappears and excess fluid accumulates. The fluidity of breathing disappears, and the pleural disease begins making breathing difficult. When there is excess fluid in the pleural space, it’s called pleural effusion. Pleural effusion can be one of the early mesothelioma stages, but if you have pleural effusion, that does not mean you have pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural diseases are not rare. If you’ve been exposed to asbestos, statistics published in British medical journals show that there is likely a 50% chance that you will have a pleural disease. Pleural disease is also common in many cancers, including breast cancer and lung cancer – it is not relegated to pleural mesothelioma or Malignant Mesothelioma. Medical journals report that 40% of cancer patients experience pleural effusion. In asbestos related pleural effusion, pleural effusion is sometimes followed by one of the next mesothelioma stages, diffuse pleural thickening.

Diffuse pleural thickening and pleural mesothelioma are not as common as pleural effusion and pleural plaques. Pleural plaques can occur from a brief exposure to asbestos, but may not be observed until 20 years later. Diffuse pleural thickening can be noticed anywhere from 3 years to 40 years after Asbestos Exposure, although it may occur as soon as a year after asbestos exposure. Medical tests must be given to determine the extent of the disease, and to monitor the progression which would indicate the likelihood of pleural mesothelioma or other malignant mesothelioma. For malignant pleural mesothelioma, the disease could be latent for 40 years or more. But pleural effusion is often diagnosed first, and can sometimes be noticed as early as a year after asbestos exposure. The degree of calcification (similar to a hardening) often determines how early the pleural disease can be identified. However, the stages of pleural calcification and mesothelioma stages of malignant mesothelioma will differ with each individual.

Pleural mesothelioma or pleural disease is not unlikely if you’ve been exposed to asbestos. If you’ve been exposed to asbestos, even for short time, and are having chest pain, it is important to start with chest x-rays to be able to monitor the progression of the disease. Medical tests for pleural diseases and pleural mesothelioma have the potential to halt the progression of malignant pleural mesothelioma as best as today’s medical discoveries allow. Early mesothelioma treatment lengthens Mesothelioma Life Expectancy. Medical tests for pleural mesothelioma should start with any signs of pleural disease. Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer that affects the serous membranes surrounding the major organs of the body i.e. the lungs, heart and the abdominal organs, causing these vital organs to inflate with excessive fluid. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a tumor of the peritoneum membrane or the abdomen lining, affecting many organs in the abdominal cavity including stomach. This form of mesothelioma cancer is less common than the pleural form but is more aggressive, resulting severe symptoms and short life expectancy. Like many other cancers, peritoneal mesothelioma can also be either malignant or benign.

Pericardial Mesothelioma:

Pericardial or Pericardium Mesothelioma is the rarest form of cancer, counting less than 10% of mesothelioma cases. In this form of cancer, fluid gets accumulated in the sac that encloses the heart. The main cause of this disease is the inhalation of asbestos fibers.

Due to the rarity of this disease, doctors and researchers have not clearly understood how The Asbestos fibers enter the heart lining or pericardium. The only logical explanation so far about this form of cancer is the possibility of the asbestos fibers, converted into tiny pieces, transported from the lung into the heart by means of blood circulation. Once the asbestos fibers enter the heart, they expand the tissues in the chest cavity and the pericardium with excessive liquid, disrupting the working of the heart and causing chest pains with breathing disorders.

* Chlorine and Trihalomethanes: Chlorine is added to water to disinfect it, as discussed above. I am looking into pulling up the kitchen floor in a 1939 built home. i was wondering would this contain asbestos underneath it?
also could i just lay tile over the top or would i have to remove existing stuff first?

ok peter is a moron. if you don’t know the answer don’t answer the question. yes is the correct answer, your flooring could contain asbestos, and probably does. my home, built in 1932, had a linoleum floor put in the kitchen in the 40-50’s. asbestos was used in the backing of the linoleum flooring, roofing shingles, tar, fiberboard( the predecessor to osb wafer-board, and all types of building products, because it was cheap and readily available. what you can do is put underlayment down over the flooring and then install your new tile. the 1/4-3/8″ plywood type panels will give you a stable base for the new floor. either screw it down or use ring shank nails to fasten it, then use levelastic on the seams and screw or nail holes. the only place that might cause you any trouble will be the dishwasher, if you have a built in. i took all of the cabinets out when i did mine and ran the underlayment and tiles wall to wall, then put the cabinets back in, so it wasn’t an issue then. good luck, hope this helps

How good a test for asbestos do I need?

I want to find out if our home’s sprayed “popcorn ceilings” (uncertain age) contain asbestos. There are various testing options with different limits of detection. I have a small budget. Which “point count” do I need to ask for when I send a sample to a lab? The test is described as EPA 600/R-93/116 with various limits of detection available. Is that the right test?

I’ve also seen a lot of references to “visual inspections.” I am kind of cynical and I expect any professional visual inspector to err on the safe side, and say it’s asbestos … what do they look for? I know I probably can’t do it myself without experience, but I’m curious.
